We are a diverse and fully distributed team from around the world, working toward our shared vision to raise the standard of trust online. Join us as a Director, Windows Engineer to help shape DuckDuckGo's products. As part of our growing team, you will collaborate with team members at all levels to bring new products to market. Examples of projects you might work on include leading the development of consumer privacy applications on Windows. You will take direct responsibility of all aspects related to products built on Windows, build new features, drive improvements, and own product maintenance. We are fully-remote and empower our team to be self-directed and self-motivated in their projects. If you'd thrive in that environment, and our core values resonate with you -- build trust, question assumptions, and validate direction -- you'll fit right in! What you will do:

  • Lead projects from proposal through postmortem, assessing vague problems, proposing high impact solutions, and executing them against a set of success criteria.

  • Lead development of consumer privacy applications on Windows, with moderate to low oversight.

  • Lead technical design and architecture discussions, and get buy-in among groups of opinionated stakeholders.

  • Advise members of the team in both functional and career growth.

  • Write pragmatic, performant, and testable C++ and C# code that works consistently across Windows devices.

  • Be a subject matter expert at the company in C++, C# and the Windows application development ecosystem.

  • Take privacy and user experience into consideration throughout the engineering process.

What we are looking for:

  • Advanced level of C++ and C# expertise.

  • Advanced level of Windows application development architecture expertise (e.g. Win32 apps, WPF apps)

  • Experience leading at least one large consumer facing Windows desktop application, serving hundreds of thousands or millions of users.

  • Experience leading technical architecture decisions for complex products.

  • Deep understanding of MV* concepts.

  • Comfortable learning new languages and ideas.

  • Experience collaborating with engineers working on other platforms (e.g. macOS, Android, iOS)

  • Experience collaborating with product/design to build polished consumer facing products.

  • Exceptional project management skills.

  • Creative problem solvers and risk takers. You like to take initiative to push projects forward and know when to involve others.

Other things to know:

  • While we leverage specific job titles for hiring purposes, we do not use them internally. Instead, we follow our own professional levels, with expectations for each level clearly defined across several dimensions.

  • We are a small, remote team distributed across time zones, and we rely on a variety of communication tools throughout the day. You should feel comfortable with the intricacies of this type of work situation.

  • Sometimes we meet up! Expect to travel at least two times a year: once for our all-hands meetup and again for a team retreat (each ~4-5 days).

  • We believe in a focused approach to collaboration, where individual team members work on a single top priority at a time, each supporting larger, company-wide objectives. This philosophy serves to impact our vision to raise the standard of trust online.

  • Our work philosophy centers on empowered project management. All team members have opportunities to run projects.

  • Transparency supports individual and team success at DuckDuckGo. We encourage everyone to participate in areas of interest throughout the company. Anyone and everyone can (and should) ask questions and offer feedback about our products and internal projects.

  • We strive to exemplify our values (build trust, question assumptions, and validate direction) in everything we do.

  • While this is a full-time job, we offer a flexible work arrangement with no core hours, expecting an average commitment of 40 hours per week.

  • We support professional development of our team members through career advisory and a learning stipend, reinforcing our culture of growth and skill-building.

DuckDuckGo does not work with any recruiting agencies or services. Instead, we work with each candidate one-on-one throughout a unique hiring process that we've built to reflect our company culture. DuckDuckGo provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment, and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws. If you think you might thrive in this environment, we would love to hear from you. Use the application to apply! Please note that:

  • A successful candidate will be subject to a background check.

  • By applying for this role, you confirm that information submitted is accurate and that you understand falsification is cause for denial of employment or termination.

About you:

  • You have some AWS experience.

  • You can code, review other team members' work, provide assistance, and appreciate feedback.

  • You can craft elegant solutions when solving complex problems.

  • You want to build something that is disrupting an entire industry.

  • While hands-on experience is not a requirement, you’re interested in learning how to apply machine learning and AI technologies and tools.

  • You can handle a fast paced environment.

  • You’ve made a lot of mistakes, and most importantly, have learned from them.

  • You have 7+ years of experience developing software.

  • You have worked remotely before.

About the role:

  • Work on a cross-functional team including front end and UX to build solutions that are easy for customers to understand, work consistently and scale well.

  • Review features and requirements and guide, design and implement solutions.

  • Understand business requirements and think through solutions in terms of not just the coding implementation but also how the solution fits into the business flow and how it solves a customer need.

  • Ability to estimate effort and ship on an agreed schedule. Comfortable pushing yourself and your team members when challenges pop up.

  • Lead regular code reviews, with the goal of code quality, good design and approach along with pushing engineers to improve and evolve.

  • Implement solutions that are pragmatic to get the platform built.

  • Have the confidence to work with experienced and talented people to just build great things, you’re not a “rockstar”.

Senior Full Stack Engineer
Senior Full Stack Engineer Sector Labs

5.1K - 7.5K

As a Senior Full Stack Engineer you will work on our real estate portals built as SPAs with React, Node and Django as well as on our customer facing tools. These are complex systems with many moving parts and drastic performance requirements. You will have to write new code and understand legacy systems, design new parts and keep an eye on performance bottlenecks.

This is a remote role accepting applicants only from European Union. A high degree of autonomy is offered and we expect you will use it to make decisions and shape the future of our software stack.

Skills & Requirements

Experience and Pragmatism

This role is for somebody who has been through several releases and products built from ground up. We expect some degree of specialisation on technology but if that does not align with the one we’re using at the moment we don’t mind.

What we expect is:

  • University Degree in CS, CE or closely related

  • At least 5 years of experience writing code professionally

  • At least 3 years of experience in web development

  • A good understanding of all common data structures

  • Ability to write complex algorithms

  • Ability to design software systems with multiple parts across multiple technologies

  • A good understanding of performance optimisation techniques

Technology

While knowing our stack is definitely an advantage, it is not by any means a disqualifying factor:

  • Python 3, Django, React, Redux, Node, Express

  • Other technologies and services: Universal Web Apps, Machine Learning, Celery, RabbitMQ, Redis, Heroku, AWS, Algolia, CDN’s

What is it like to work for us?

Here are some ideas we have that might help you figure that out:

  • Autonomy: you will choose the tools you want to use and get to make all the technical decisions as long as they make sense (that's for the CTO to approve)

  • Mastery: we will encourage and support you to learn as long as it takes so you can feel proud about your work (the nice side effect of this is having awesome products built by you)

  • Offering the best and expecting to get the same in return: annual allowance for gear upgrades (chair, computer, etc.)

About Us

We're part of a group of companies which operate some of the biggest real-estate web portals in four countries in Asia and Africa. Our purpose is to help provide the technology for these high traffic websites as well as for the back-office operations including sales and marketing.

EUR/Monthly
5.3K - 8.3K

We’re looking for an independent and ambitious fullstack engineer who wants to make a big impact at this early stage in our roadmap.

As an engineer at Almanac, you will be responsible for building out the intuitive, interactive experiences that our customers need to organize their documentation, as well as contributing to the backend architecture and endpoints that we need to support those features.

Specifically, you will:

  • Regularly build and ship high-impact features from scratch

  • Write well-tested code in a modern technology stack

  • Participate in standups, code reviews and retrospectives with our remote team

  • Work closely with our Head of Engineering and the engineering team to make architecture and design decisions

  • Help make sure everything runs smoothly & safely in production

  • Set down standards around development, code review and deployment

Our tech stack

  • Rails, Postgres, React, Algolia, Terraform

  • Team size: 11-50 people

Things we love

  • Deploying 20 times a day, simple JSON APIs, RSpec & Cypress, Algolia, git, giphy integrations, continuous delivery, Heroku, vim (ok, maybe just me), Tartine croissants

What you bring to the role

  • You have at least 3 years of full stack experience, building frontends in React—or any other JS framework—whilst also being confident working with Ruby on the backend.

  • You understand the tradeoffs between quality and speed in an early stage startup environment.

  • You are passionate about getting things live and iterating fast.

  • You’re confident writing automated tests, and you get excited by little green dots.

  • You are a strong communicator and can clearly explain the tasks and tradeoffs for new features.

  • You care about the feature as a whole, not just the implementation, and can make smaller decisions on your own when required.

Working at Almanac

At Almanac, we:

  • Are fundamental optimists who believe we’re still only at the start of the digital age.

  • Desire working with deeply kind, mission-driven people.

  • Strive to make the complex simple.

  • Use first principles to debate ideas, test assumptions, and make decisions.

  • Seek the truth by putting data above opinions.

  • Assume good intent and give tactical feedback to help each other get better.

  • Hold no ego—when our customers win, we all win.

As a company, we are seriously committed to your professional development and growth:

  • You will set your own monthly goals aligned with our ambitious strategy

  • You will have our collective support in achieving major wins—and personal coaching from your manager

  • You will be encouraged to take risks, try new things, and be creative with your work

  • You will have many opportunities to exchange and engage in feedback

  • You will be offered continual chances to stretch yourself and raise your own bar

  • You will be rewarded for achieving excellence and mastery

Senior Front End Engineer
Senior Front End Engineer Mote Technologies Inc
EUR/Monthly
4.2K - 6.7K

Joining as only the second full-time engineer after Alex Nunes, CTO and co-founder, you will play a critical role in taking over ownership of our front-end code bases (Chrome extension and website), engineering practices and technology mix. You will be expected to play a significant part in shaping overall engineering culture and hiring other great engineers. The current front-end stack is built with React.js & ES6 with a fairly usual suspect modern toolchain of Webpack, Jest, CircleCI, CloudFront, Sentry, Segment and Datadog,

The back-end is built with Python, Flask, Redis, Dynamo, EC2, EFS, S3 and sprinklings of GCP. A desire to contribute to back-end API implementation is welcomed if full stack feature ownership is strongly desired as a preferred way of working, but is very far from an essential requirement.

About you
You want your next role to have a real and direct impact on improving the lives of our teacher and student users, who - like all of us - are trying to navigate the new pandemic reality.

You are now a committed remotie (and maybe that happened during the pandemic). Remote work is not for everyone. Stop reading if you severely miss the camaraderie but also the distractions and presenteeism of working in an office.

Over the past few roles, the feedback you have been accruing from colleagues and managers is that of a stellar contributor and collaborator. Not only do you consistently turn in great work at a startup pace, but you are a supportive and constructive team player who makes everyone better and happier around you.

You not only turn out great code but have a passion for usable, beautiful, delightful UX. You are mildly obsessive about tight CSS, pixel-perfect design, stutters and frame rates. We don’t currently employ full time UX so you will be expected to embrace, extend and probably ultimately replace our web design language. You already have a personal portfolio website where you showcase your UX/UX mastery.

You gravitate to high levels of ownership. We’re a tiny team, there is little room to cherry pick more interesting work from yak shaving. You like to immerse yourself in a codebase, becoming familiar over time with its many corners, banking many small wins, zooming out occasionally to question and explore priorities, while regularly tending to the weeds of technical debt that need refactoring to keep the codebase clean and productive.

You are intellectually curious about the world, the business you work in and your craftsmanship. We don’t pretend to have all or even most  of the answers around how  to make our product more delightful and useful to users, we’ve just had a good and lucky start. You will not only challenge us to come up with better solutions to satisfy user needs but keep pushing us to use smarter tools, technologies and processes to efficiently achieve that goal.

You are comfortable with ambiguity and risk. We are at the relative beginning of our startup journey, we have some early conviction and confidence on a few questions, but there is much detail and optimisation to be worked out as we go along. You will be expected to make reasonable guesses on many questions, rather than relying on others around you to fill in all the gaps. We will all be wrong often, but as long as our hypotheses and assumptions are explicit and testable, we can learn as we go along.

You are opinionated but not dogmatic, your opinions can be changed with new data, experiments or respectful debate. Feedback is the core of our business, so you should be willing and able to give and receive constructive and actionable feedback

You can hit the ground running here and now. You have in-depth, hands-on knowledge of React.js, ES6, JavaScript, CSS, Webpack, with strong web networking and browser performance fundamentals. Knowledge of others, maybe shinier - things are nice too (eg TypeScript, Vue.js, Elm, WASM) but only useful if you’re able to  persuade yourself, and the team, that they justify their switching or introduction costs. Knowledge of Chrome extension development is desirable but not essential (the relative learning curve is not that great).

Back-End Engineer
Back-End Engineer VoiceThread
EUR/Monthly
5.3K - 9.8K

Our platform enables people to communicate better, to learn better, and to listen better. It's not a marketing slogan. There's already a great deal of research that’s been published demonstrating the effectiveness of VoiceThreading in teaching and learning, however we think that education is the tip of the iceberg. Asynchronous online communication is almost universally text only and we are quite sure that’s going to change. Somebody just needs to make the experience usable enough and we’re well positioned to make that happen.

The platform is already in production use by thousands of universities and schools around the world, including a large percentage of the very best.

Position Summary

You will work with other engineers and other stakeholders to:

  • Maintain and refactor existing PHP code to make it more reliable, secure, and efficient.

  • Plan and implement new API capabilities that meet everyone's needs.

  • Continuously improve our processes to make them as humane and effective as possible.

Personal Qualifications

We are definitely looking for a 1X Engineer. We value character highly. Humility, hard work, and a sense of humor can often solve problems where naked intelligence falls short, as well as make you someone that is a pleasure to work with. We seek to foster and maintain a company culture of curiosity, sharing, and performing for each other. To accomplish this goal it must first be valued by everyone.

Requirements

You have experience:

  • ...working in a Unix environment.

  • ...developing, deploying, and testing API integrations with other platforms and web services.

  • ...gaining a deep understanding of internet infrastructure and protocols.

You should:

  • ...approach problems with curiosity, flexibility, and persistence.

  • ...have strong written and spoken English language skills.

  • ...communicate openly and often.

It would be a plus if you have:

  • …hands-on experience maintaining large services at scale.

  • …deep knowledge or existing experience with OAuth web flows.

  • ...some experience with mentoring

Frontend React Developer for E-Commerce Analytics Product
Frontend React Developer for E-Commerce Analytics Product Scalable Path
EUR/Monthly
4.4K - 7.2K

Scalable Path is looking for a Frontend React Developer for an E-Commerce Analytics Product to join the team and work on a client project. This is a remote, full-time position, but the client is also open to part-time availability.

The pay rate for this role is from $30 - $50 USD per hour, depending on experience and capability.

CLIENT COMPANY DESCRIPTION: The client is a SaaS startup backed by an established company with 50+ employees and over $100 million in annual revenue. The new product you will be working with has a smaller team and is focused on providing analytics and insights to companies who sell their products in marketplaces like Amazon.com and Walmart.com.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The client has an existing monolithic web application that is built using PostgreSQL, Python (Flask). There are essentially 6 user dashboards that communicate different types of e-commerce data to the user (sales, traffic, ad spending, ROI, sentiment analysis, etc.). The HTML for these dashboards is currently being served by Flask and their appearance is rather generic. The client is redesigning each of the 6 dashboards and customizing each one to display data in precisely the way that makes the most sense for the specific data being displayed on the given page. The UX designer is using Framer and has already completed the new design for one of the dashboards.

Your job will be to implement the new designs while simultaneously converting the dashboard from a monolithic page that is rendered on the server to a React/Redux-based page that consumes an API. For this reason, if you have experience with Python and Flask this would be a big bonus since you could help with the development of the API as well if needed.
